Transport is an essential service providing access to opportunities for the common citizens. In this light the Centre for Urban Governance drafted ‘The Urban Transport Policy for Madhya Pradesh’ for the Department of Urban Development and Housing (UDHD), GoMP. The proposed policy contextualizes the National Urban Transport Policy, 2006 by MOHUA, GoI. Madhya Pradesh will be the second state after Maharashtra to envisage such a policy. The policy professes ‘Right to Transportation’ and movement of people rather than vehicles. Some of the key recommendations of the policy include MaaS i.e., ‘Mobility as a Service’, ‘Eyes on the Street’, disability-based planning, allocation of funds under dedicated urban transport fund for development of non-motorized service infrastructure, and capacity building to promote transport literacy. It also suggests a framework for a dedicated Urban Transport Body for every city with a population of 5 lakhs and above.
